Many people know that surfers should wear earplugs for surfing on a regular basis. But is this really necessary? Yes it is, that is unless you want to go deaf and have frequent infections. Surfer's ear is a common condition. It affects the majority of surfers who have been surfing for many years and haven't been taking precautions. The cooling effect of seawater and wind on the ear results in the formation of tiny bony lumps around the opening of the canal. Over time these enlarge, closing the ear canal over. Once the narrowing reaches 90% then deafness becomes noticeable. Infections are far more common as dirt and dead skin cells build up in the narrowed canal. Drying time is also prolonged, meaning that this culture medium remains moist. This makes it an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.
For full protection it is also necessary to wear a neoprene hood which you have pulled down low in order to keep the bone around the ears nice and warm.
It is commonly thought that it is not necessary for these precautions to be taken during warm weather or whilst surfing in tropical waters. The evaporative effects of wind and water can lead to active cooling of the region even when the weather is warm.
ZenPlugs surfing earplugs are ideal for this purpose. They are waterproof, antibacterial and incredibly comfortable. They even can be connected on a cord. You are less likely to lose them as they are available in bright colours and the cord can be tied onto your kitbag so that you don't lose them.
The condition is treatable with an operation which involves drilling or chiselling the extra bone away. Prevention is definitely better than cure! Having the operation does not protect you against recurrence of the condition so you will still need to wear earplugs.
