If you are a regular surfer it is important to protect yourself against a nasty dose of surfer's ear. Most lifelong surfers might not be aware that most of them will have a degree of the condition, even if they haven't noticed. It doesn't usually become apparent until the ear canal becomes about ninety percent closed over. At this point deafness starts to set in.
The condition occurs due to the ear's response to the cold wind and water causing new bone growth around the opening. Many people wrongly believe that they are not at risk when they are surfing warm waters and in the summer. This is not true. The evaporation of water from the skin of the ear means that cooling still occurs. This means that precautions need to be taken all year round and in all conditions.
The second problem that the narrowing causes is impaired clearing of the debris which can collect in the canal. This leads to muffled hearing and recurrent ear infections. Dead skin and dirt build up. The ear takes longer to dry out after surfing. This leads to the growth of fungi and bacteria. Ear infections often need treating with eardrops.
Surfer's ear plugs need to prevent these problems. They do this by keeping wind and water out. This means that they need to be non-porous, impervious to water and resistant to degradation by sea water and pool water. ZenPlugs are particularly useful in this instance because they are all these things as well as being antibacterial. This means they are able to kill every germ known to cause external ear infections; swimmer's ear.
ZenPlugs are also super-brightly coloured. This gives you the best chance of finding them when you drop them on the beach or into the foot well in your orange VW Camper Van.
